Mentoring & Inspiring Women in Radio Group and Nielsen Music Announce 2nd Annual Mentoring Program for Women in Radio

Applications are now open for women in radio seeking to sharpen their skills & further a career in music programming

NAPLES, FL, July 18, 2018 - The Mentoring & Inspiring Women in Radio (MIW) Group, a volunteer organization dedicated to the advancement of female leadership in radio, and Nielsen Music, the industry’s leading source for music data and solutions-driven insights, are now accepting applications for the 2nd Annual MIW-Nielsen Music Mentoring Program. The program is a collaborative effort that creates greater opportunities for women interested in management positions in music broadcast programming across the country.

The one year mentorship program matches a female programming candidate with key mentors from throughout the broadcast industry, including the MIW Radio Group and Nielsen Music.  The MIW-Nielsen Music Mentoring Program is designed to sharpen the mentee’s programming and professional skills and further her music programming career. The program includes a scholarship to attend the 2018 Radio Show produced by the RAB and NAB.

Leslie Scott, Program Director, KNDD 107.7 The End, Seattle , and the 2017 MIW-Nielsen Music Mentee, said, “The MIW-Nielsen Music programming mentorship has afforded me so many new opportunities in the industry. I’ve worked with some incredibly talented women who have helped me grow both as a programmer and a leader, and I’ve made some great new friends in the process. I encourage every woman in programming to apply for this amazing opportunity.”

The mentorship is available to one female program director, assistant program director, and/or music director from any music format. Interested candidates may visit www.RadioMIW.com for details and an application form. The deadline for submitting completed applications is August 15th 2018. The winner will be announced at the 2018 Radio Show in Orlando on September 26th, 2018.

“We couldn’t be more appreciative of Nielsen Music for their continued support of this critically important mission: increasing the visibility and success of women in programming.  And hats off to Leslie Scott, our very first MIW-Nielsen Music Mentee.  She was a joy to work with and a focused, talented programmer who ups the game for all programmers in our business,” said Ruth Presslaff, Founder and President of Presslaff Interactive Revenue and MIW Group executive committee member spearheading the MIW’s project.

The MIW Group’s annual MIW Gender Analysis Report has tracked the growth of women in radio management since 2004. Although slight increases in female general managers and sales managers have been reported, the percentage of women in programming has remained essentially flat for the past eleven years.  The MIW-Nielsen Music Mentoring Program was created in 2017 to address this concern.

Haley Jones, Director of Radio at Nielsen Entertainment, said "Nielsen Music is excited to renew our collaborative efforts with the MIW Group to mentor ambitious female radio program directors. We believe this is a highly effective program, based on last year’s tremendous success with Leslie Scott, and we look forward to fostering more opportunities for women programmers in radio."

The MIW-Nielsen Music Mentoring Program supplements the ongoing MIW Group Mildred Carter Mentoring Program, which offers women in all divisions of radio advice for broadcasting management, education and coveted access to leaders in radio broadcasting at the very highest level.
