Kim Guthrie graduated from Iowa State University in 1984 with a BA degree in Journalism. After 5 years as a TV news reporter/anchor, Guthrie moved over to radio as an account executive at WLXR AM/FM in LaCrosse, WI. She then spent 6 years at WLUM in Milwaukee as AE, LSM, and GSM – working for Green Bay Packer legend Willie Davis. She later launched the first sales duopoly for Heritage Media in Milwaukee in 1993 – with WMYX, WEZW and WEMP.
Guthrie then worked for Hubbard Broadcasting as General Sales Manager for KSTP-FM/KS95 in Minneapolis for 3½ years, before moving to New York in 1998 when she became General Manager of Cox Radio’s Long Island radio cluster. In just 2 years, she completely rebuilt the property, overhauled both stations’ on-air line-ups, assembled a new management team and increased profits by over 100% at the 2 Long Island stations.
A major turning point for Guthrie and her Long Island, NY stations occurred with the World Trade Center attacks. When this tragedy occurred – just 30 miles from her Long Island studios – Guthrie pre-empted regular programming for 6 days on her 2 music stations, WBLI and WBAB. She and her staff converted the stations to a commercial-free, news/talk format for 6 days, helping Long Islanders grieve and deal with the tragedy. The stations raised $1.4 million in cash for the victims’ families and sent 50 semi-trailers of rescue supplies directly to Ground Zero. The decision to scrap the regular music format and commit 100% of the stations’ efforts to help the Long Island community propelled both stations to record ratings levels. For the first time in 14 years, WBLI and WBAB toppled the perennial Long Island radio leader in virtually every major demographic and daypart in the Fall 2001 Arbitron – and held the position for the next 5 ratings books. Both radio stations have received several nominations since 9-11 for the prestigious Station of the Year NAB Marconi Awards – for Excellence in Broadcasting. In addition, WBAB and WBLI have earned multiple New York Air Awards, 2 AWRT Gracie Awards, and numerous nominations by the industry for programming excellence and outstanding community involvement.
Cox Radio promoted Kim in 2001, making her Regional Vice President. She now oversees 16 radio stations for Cox, Houston, TX; Long Island, NY; Greenville, SC; Stamford/Norwalk, CT; Bridgeport, CT; and New Haven, CT. She also holds the title of Market Manager of Cox Radio— Connecticut.
Guthrie was honored by the March of Dimes as their “Woman of Distinction” in 2002, was a Long Island Business News honoree for “40 Under 40” in 2001 and was named “Humanitarian of the Year” in 2000 by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She held board member positions with the New York Association of Radio Stations (NYMRAD), the Red Cross and the Promote Long Island organization. She has been voted one of the top 20 Most Influential Women in Radio for the past 5 years by Radio Ink Magazine, and was named one of the 10 Best General Managers In Radio in 2002. In 2003 and 2004, Guthrie was voted one of the 10 Best Regional/Corporate Managers in Radio.
Her interests include reading, downhill skiing, cooking, boating, playing the piano and collecting radios. Kim and husband Todd are trailblazers in the parenting arena – as former radio Program Director Todd has been a full-time father since the birth of their first daughter Madeline 16 years ago. Madeline was later joined by 2 sisters: Bonnie, now 13, and Greta, now 9.
