Born 1949 in Scranton, PA, to Frank
(deceased) and Nancy Burke, the second oldest of five
children. Moved to the Harrisburg, PA area in 1959,
and attended Trinity High School and West Chester University,
majoring in elementary education.
My radio career
began in February 1978, at WKBO, Harrisburg’s
big Top 40 radio station…as a single parent with
two young children and absolutely no background in media.
The ability to provide for my children was extremely
motivating.
Fifteen months later
I took a position as the marketing coordinator for Hersheypark.
Working at a theme park is both fun and frustrating.
During the park season, days are hectic. Off-season
they drag unmercifully. It soon became obvious that
I needed to return to the “here today, gone tomorrow”
pace of radio.
My timing was impeccable.
WTPA in Harrisburg was preparing for a major format
change from easy listening to AOR and just beginning
to hire a full staff (it had operated as a closet facility
to the local ABC-TV affiliate). In July 1980, I accepted
the position of sales manager for the new FM 104. The
general manager resigned in early 1982, and a month
later the station owner, NewChannels, announced that
the property was being sold. I was asked to oversee
the transition as acting station manager. In May 1982,
Foster Media purchased the station, and I was retained
as its GM and given VP stripes the following year. The
station was sold again in November 1984, and I became
the VP/GM of Keymarket Communications of PA and successfully
supervised the format change to CHR and the birth of
WNNK – WINK 104.
Keymarket owner, Kerby
Confer, approached me in 1990 with an opportunity to
own and operate stations in Altoona, PA. We purchased
WFBG AM/FM in April 1991, changing the FM to WFGY –
FROGGY 98 – within a day of the transfer.
FROGGY’s success
enabled the company to expand, and in 1994 we took control
of stations in Lima, Ohio and Utica, New York. Within
the next three years, Forever Broadcasting tripled in
size with expansion in its existing markets and regions.
In 2000 Forever sold its New York properties but purchased
ten stations in Meadville-Franklin, Pennsylvania. In
2002 we purchased three stations in Huntingdon, PA.
Forever currently owns and operates 30 stations in Pennsylvania
and Ohio, with 245 dedicated employees.
As president of Forever,
I am the chief operating officer, primary cheerleader,
and “mom”.
Personally, I am the
proud mother of two beautiful daughters, Heather (Harrisburg,
PA) and Erin (Parker, Colorado) and the grandmother
of 10 year old Taylor. The small community in which
I live demands involvement, so I serve on several boards
of directors. I am also a board member of the Pennsylvania
Association of Broadcasters and an active AIMS member.
